Day 7 – Lviv to Kiev

Tuesday December 7th 2021
Lviv to Kiev

The train pulled out of the station just a few minutes late on the seven hour journey from Lviv to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

The four of us had a carriage to ourselves and we relaxed enjoying the scenes passing by.  Of course we also discussed the places we had seen and the ones that were on our list for Kiev.

A couple of hours before we reached the capital, the snowy scenes disappeared, odd pockets of snow dotting the landscape again as we were approaching the city.

It was rush hour and the taxi taking us to our hotel took much longer than we had estimated due to the bumper to bumper traffic.

Independence Square

It was after 7pm when we checked into the Hotel Ukraine overlooking the famous Independence Square/Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The rooms have a tiny balcony that two people can just stand on to enjoy the view.

The square is often simply referred to as Maiden.  Its impressive 61 metre high statue was erected in 2001 to celebrate 10 years of independence.

After a quick freshen up, we set off in search of dinner. Earlier, we had learnt that the restaurant named ‘Chicken Kiev” (which we wanted to try while in the city) had permanently closed.

There was definitely a lack of eateries in the area and in the end we found a pub that served food.  It was very quiet but we enjoyed a tasty meal. After which we returned to the hotel.
