Day 1-Chania, Crete to Milan

Thursday 15th June 2023

Our flight today will take us direct to Bergamo, a city in Northern Italy just 19 kilometres from the Swiss Border.

Although Bergamo is apparently a beautiful city to visit, we will be travelling to Milan which is situated approximately 40 kilometres from Bergamo.

The plane landed just before 9pm and we were soon out of the main terminal and looking at the awaiting coaches. “Milano?” one driver shouted to us. ‘Yes” we replied and hurried over.

Forty five minutes later we arrived at Milan Central Station.  We joined perhaps the longest taxi queue we have ever seen; there must have been 70 people in front of us.  However, the white taxis were coming thick and fast and in just 10 minutes we were at the front of the queue and getting into a cab. A ten minute ride took us to the hotel.

The hotel didn’t have a reception; we had a code to enter the building and a further code to open a drawer where the key card to our room could be found.  A note warned us to always take the key card with us every time we left the room so as not to lock ourselves out.

The not so welcoming note added ‘If this happens during the night, we will not be able to help you.’ The red painted corridor had metre high white numbers painted outside the doors. Our room had all we needed and was spacious and clean.

Leaving our bags we walked a few steps to the only eatery we could see was still open, which turned out to be Japanese, not where we expected to be eating on our first or any evening in Italy.

After plates of pork and noodles and a couple of Japanese beers, we walked the few steps back to our accommodation.
